OOL. OFFICE

GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG, 28th September, 1927.

With reference to previous correspondence,

X

308322 terminating with my despatch No.540 of 29th July, 1927,^on

in came the subject of the recruitment of Medical and Health Officers

for this Colony, I have the honour to inform you that I have had under consideration the question of the reorganisation of the Medical Department and the revision of the salaries

of the senior staff.

2. You are aware of the difficulty which this Colony has experienced in recruiting suitable Medical Officers, particularly for posts where specialist qualifications are required, and I am of opinion that a revision of the salary scales is necessary, if this Colony is to be able to recruit competent men for its service and offer adequate encouragement in the way of improved prospects to its present officers.

3.

In the first place I propose that the title of the Principal Civil Medical Officer shall be changed to the now widely-recognized title, Director of Medical and Sanitary Services, and that the salary of the post shall be raised to the scale £1200-250-£1450 which approaches the scale of the Director of Public Works, the Treasurer, and other heads of large departments; and that Dr. Addison be advanced to £1250 on his next incremental date (in 1928).

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

LIEUTENANT COLONEL L.C.M.S. AMERY, M.P.,
